First Day

Only two girls to send off this year…two more with a first day next week.  Halle headed off to her first day of Middle School and Lainey to her first day of High School and her first volleyball game.  Both were nervous and excited for a new year and a new school.  So was I.  And apparently we were not very good at getting ready this year.  Let me explain…

The day started off great, but we had some unexpected bumps along the way.  Here’s how it went:

-up at 6:00 a.m.  and ready to go.

-breakfast, back-to-school blessings, lunches fixed.

-girls to school 30 mins. early because Lainey insists.

-find out Riley was out until 4 a.m.  Joe found her, brought her home, and they had a long talk.  He handled it, but I am furious!

-head out to the trails with the dogs to pound out some anger and frustration.

-back home to plan final shopping trip for college prep…Riley refuses.  Fine!

-in the midst of arguing with Riley, get a call from Halle…she can’t stay at school because she didn’t get her booster shot.  Are you kidding me?!

A week earlier I had tried to get it at registration and they wouldn’t do it because they don’t contract with our health insurance.  While we were still at the school, I called our doctor’s office…they wouldn’t do shots without a physical.  I scheduled the physical for the first appointment they had…3:30 p.m. on the first day of school.  Not good enough.  I argued with the secretary and principal on the phone and at the school, and then brought Halle home.

-Lainey called from school because she forgot part of her volleyball uniform…Joe took it to her, and I remembered that I still have to finish her registration.  Luckily, she got to stay.

-annual back-to-school lunch with some lovely ladies.  Brief respite.

-Halle to the doctor for appointment and shots.

-back home to breathe.

-Riley is now ready to go shopping, but with her friends and not me.  Fine!

-Halle and I eat peanut butter sandwiches for dinner.

-Halle and I feed the stinky turkeys.

-Halle and I come home and crash.

-Riley wanders into my bedroom to talk at 10:00 p.m.

-Lainey home from her first volleyball game at 11:45 p.m.

-finally sleep at 12:30…and now it is the second day!

We are all a bit tired and grumpy today, but Halle is excited for her first full day of school.  Today is Joe’s birthday and we are spending the day moving Riley into her apartment.  I’m anticipating tears, frustration, anger, excitement, and sadness.  Hopefully we will get a chance to celebrate, too.

Parenting is a crazy roller coaster of emotions and exhaustion and exhilaration.  I hope we survive!
